What are the advantages of linear LED high bays vs UFO high bays?

Linear LED high bays combine better light spread for maximum distribution and higher efficiency for increased energy savings. It typically requires fewer fixtures to achieve desired light levels. LED linear high bays are also easier to maintain, highly sustainable and may be upgraded for retrofit in the future. They should not be thrown away when drivers and diodes reach the end of life.

Do linear LED high bays have heat issues?

Extreme internal heat inside any high output LED fixture can cause gel capacitors to dry out within the driver components. In turn, this causes premature driver failure long before the end of rated life. Well designed linear LED high bay should be constructed of aluminum (superior to steel for heat dissipation), vented for heat escape, and provide an adequate heat sink to absorb and disperse heat away from LED diodes and drivers.

What about glare with LED’s?

Linear LED high bays typically require lenses to diffuse glare. As a general rule, lens diffusers should be used for low bay locations (below 15′)  as well as high bay locations 15′ to 30′. In higher applications, a lens may not be necessary. It also depends on the sightline of the fixture and the application. In many cases, lighting manufacturers will base fixture efficacy on open fixtures without lenses. This is excellent for stating high LPW (lumens per watt), but may not be suitable for the needs of the application. Accurate lumen calculations need to be addressed with and without lenses for the best measure of performance.

Fixture Efficiency vs Efficacy?

Fixture efficiency is calculated by the amount of light produced by the light source within the fixture vs the total amount of light emitted by the fixture. Fixture efficacy is the measurement of useful light output per unit of electricity.  This is calculated by dividing the total lumens emitted from the light fixture by the total wattage consumed by the light fixture, lumens per watt (LPW).

How do I determine an equivalent LED fixture to replace my fluorescent fixture?

Typically with LED linear high bays, you may decrease rated lumens by 15% to 30%, possibly more. T5 and T8 fluorescent high bay ratings are based on system lumens, not actual fixture lumens. Fixture efficiency is not stated upfront. LED linear high bay testing accounts for both fixture efficiency and efficacy (LPW). A quality T5 or T8 high bay should have a fixture efficiency of 85%, so a 4-lamp T5 high bay stated at 20,000 lumens is actually producing 17,000 useable lumens. Couple that with higher color rendering (CRI), and broader spectrum light, linear LED’s, in short, provide a better quality lumen for higher visual acuity. To eliminate guesswork, the most accurate method for determining light measurements (foot-candles) and the lumens needed per fixture is to prepare or request a photometric lighting layout using credible IES files.
